The hike/climb to the summit of Half Dome is something that has to be experienced, first hand, to be full appreciated. The views on this hike are awe inspiring. There are many accounts of this hike on the internet with many different views about preparation and difficulty. I would recommend two things. Start as early as possible if you are starting from the valley floor (we were on the trail at 5:15 am)... and take your time! Pace yourself, stop and take in the scenery often. And, yes, the cable climb at the top can be a daunting experience. If you look closely at this image, you can see the cable climb up along the left side of the frame. Those little specs are hikers making the slow progress to Half Dome's glorious summit.
