

One of the real treasures, on the island of Lana'i, is being able to watch the Spinner Dolphins that frequent Hulopo'e Bay. It is not unusual to see dozens of these playful creatures jumping and spinning quite close to the beach. This photo was taken a few years before increasing numbers of people, trying to "swim with the dolphins" started to be a problem. I have lived on Lana'i since 1991... and I have completely stopped trying to photograph the Spinner Dolphins underwater. When I see them approaching the bay, I don't even go into the water. At this point, I only photograph them from the beach as they leap from the water. In this image, a group of Spinner Dolphins were cruising the bottom of Hulopoe Bay. You can see their shadows on the sand below.
