Not far from Lake Tahoe, Donner Pass and Donner Lake mark the site of one of the great tragedies of the western movement of 1846. The Donner Party, a looseknit band of midwestern farmers and adventurers from Independence Missouri met their fate in a severe Sierra winter. Snow was reported to have reached 22 feet deep during that terrrible winter. Without adequate provisions, the party began to die off, one by one. The few that survived, subsisted on ox hides, and finally the bodies of their dead friends and relatives. I rarely produce black and white images... but, this medium just seemed to "fit" the Donner Lake area... with it's unique natural beauty and tragic past.
